Curators: Corina Cimpoieru, CNDB Archives official, and Bogdan Movileanu, editor Film materials from the ANF Archive.

The unique selection of archive films discovers the different histories of dance in niche areas of the Romanian film genre. Ephemeral states of dance in sync with the "new media" of the silent film in the 20’s can be seen in the choreographic sketches performed by Elena Penescu Liciu (first ballerina at the Opera in Cluj), next to the ballet group of the Cărăbuș Theater, in the comedy "Lache in harem" (1928, directed by Marcel Blossoms). One of the best synth-pop/dance/electronic export bands in Romania, Karpov not Kasparov has performed, in recent years, throughout Europe, from clubs to big festivals. Their music is reminiscent of the 80’s disco with an optimistic and danceable sound. This year, Karpov not Kasparov accepted BIDFF’s invitation to arrange a cine concert based on the films in the CNDB Archive.

I.Time Stands Witness - 5 Sept | 18.30

Ten dance films, from eight countries will give you goosebumps. Time stands witness to these out of the ordinary stories, in which the body finds itself mirrored in a parallel universe.

ii.The Road not Taken - 6 SEPT | 18.30

These eleven films, from nine countries delve into darkness, struggle for light and search for new meanings for love. Like in Robert Frost's poem, the protagonists of these uncommon stories, find themselves faced with impossible choices.

iii.Acts of Rebellion - 7 SEPT | 18.30

Find yourself in a mass jubilation, somewhere in Europe, and then travel to Iran where a little girl is playing hopscotch while her village is bombed and a performance artist defies the laws and dances in the streets of Tehran. Now you are in a fighting pit, where contemporary dance meets wrestling and hip-hop moves talk about fatherhood. You stop in a purple field where you meet a naked man confronting loneliness. In a second you are transported to a Voodoo Carnival in the Caribbean. A unique BIDFF screening of nine films from six countries, where the body never stops fighting.

As an artist, Andy Wood works cross-disciplinarily, working in cinema, video art, photography and sound. He is one of the most famous creators of dance films, renowned for his minimalist style and architectural aesthetics. His films and video works have been presented at international film festivals, art galleries, prisons, public spaces and TVs. Andy studied Fine Arts in the UK, worked as a musician and producer for several years and currently runs a documentary film and art house production company. He is one of the developers of Leeds International Film Festival and organizes a competition dedicated to short films within Short Film City.

What goes as love in the age of the virtual, when everything turns into numbers? Images, feelings and sensations are blurring away. Stories of contemporary witches, rebellious ballerinas, superheroes, sea inhabitants and bubble gum appear. These 12 short films have been carefully selected by teenagers for a teenager audience, but not only. Ioana Bogdana and Eva Todica from Super - Festival invite you to an exploration of movement with meaning.

Contemporary medicine is increasingly concerned with the profound impact of social isolation and broken social structures on individual well-being and health, and debates on environmental sustainability are advancing notions of constructive communities in the search for a better future. Much of screen performance however portrays athletic, idealised individuals and spectacular acts, which may produce a ‘wow’ effect but add little to our understanding of communal relations, dynamics and potentials. My question is, how can screen-based representations, screen performance and screendance reflect on contemporary communities, and what can screendance contribute to these debates? I will look at the work of choreographer, composer and filmmaker Meredith Monk, in particular her film Ellis Island (Rosen and Monk, 1982), as well as Michael Haneke’s Code Unknown (2000) and The White Ribbon (2009), and earlier experimental screendance such as the work of Amy Greenfield, to explore subjecthood on screen. I will consider cinematic and choreographic strategies such a depersonalisation, and the sculpting of space and time through ritualised action.

Short DANCE FILMS From SPain, Presented BY CERVANTES INSTITUTE

@LINOTIP - CENTRU COREGRAFIC INDEPENDENT

Cervantes Institute Bucharest, in collaboration with FIVER - international festival and showcase platform that supports and produces dance and audio-visual works, created in Spain in 2012 - a unique selection of dance film shorts (fiction and documentaries), created by Spanish directors.

Curated by Samuel Retortillo, the director of the festival, the selection is a showcase of cinematographic works in which the movement is the foundation of dramaturgical works.

Prestigious Spanish film directors, of three generations, form a perfect sample which summarises what dance film is: a way of using the language of movement by mixing complementary arts, in which the creator chooses the art of dance to come alive on a screen.

The Emotional Bodies program is made up of five very special films, whose authors have decided to embark on an ever-fascinating journey through the infinite territories of human experience. With each film, we discover a new type of physical language, created especially to awaken the spectator's emotion to a level that no other art, except dance, touches. There’s no surprise that the dance films in the program cover a variety of emotions and situations that range from the bitter experience of solitude to the hyperactivity in the modern jungle of finances, from family relationships and generation gaps to post-internet communities.

Maguy Marin: L'urgence d'agir
